Help the Harp Maker move back to California

November 10, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

With Obama getting elected, at least there’s hope.
But with the economy like it is, a lot of us need to work together
and help each other out. To me the SCA and RenFaire Folk have always been like a big, crazy, affectionate Family So I’m turning to you for help.

Maybe some of you remember me…

In the SCA I’ve been Lord Muis the Insane for 35 years. At Renaissance Faires I made and sold Harps, dulcimers, doorharps, etc for almost 25 years as DREAMSINGER HARPS. Website: http://dreamsingerharps.com
but ended up with a lot of Credit Card Debt So I had to stop making Harps and spent 3 years as a Truck driver.  (for reasons I won’t go into I can’t drive Trucks for a while) So right now I’m making some wire strung Harps and putting them on eBay. (my eBay persona is Magicharps)
This is NOT an advertisement (well, a little maybe)

THIS IS WHAT I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME WITH

I’m moving back to Southern California (huzzah!) to start a new
chapter, and live with my 92 year old Mother.

BUT I HAVE NO PLACE FOR ME TO SET UP SHOP!

I need help getting work or starting up my Harp Making business again.

I have no money, no assets other than my woodworking tools and skills.

Maybe you or someone you know has always wanted to make instruments,

or maybe you or someone you know wants to make a living doing
Renaissance Faires and need a business/partner/product.

Perhaps there’s an instrument or cabinet maker who can use an
experienced assistant or partner.

Or a renaissance faire craftsman (I don’t have to make instruments)

Or even someone with a wood shop who can let me use one corner in
return for a percentage. Or even a mostly empty 2 car garage.

Any place within an hour’s drive of North Long Beach, (Lakewood)

I may not have a place to put my tools, so I might have to leave a
lot of them behind if I don’t know in advance there’s room for them
somewhere.

If you’d like to help, or know someone, or want to buy a Doorharp for
xmas, please write me at dreamsinger@joimail.com

Knight Mist: Episode 2

By Stevil Strange

Snipe made a quick swerve to the left and my head banged against the door of the cab. I sat up because at least that way I would be able to hold on to the O.S. handle above the door.

The traffic on the bridge was very congested and soon the chase had slowed to a crawl.

"Damn it!" Snipe said, " Traffic was never like this in ‘Bullitt’."

"Yeah, but Steve McQueen didn’t drive a mini-truck that was three different colors." I commented.

I have had a few ‘incidents’ in my truck. The cab is silver, the bed is green and the tail gate is brown. It ain’t pretty and it’s 14 years old, but it’s paid for, runs good and gets great gas mileage.

We inched along with the traffic and Snipe finally calmed down a bit.

After a few minutes I spoke. "It’s your own fault you know."

"How’s that?" He asked.

"We didn’t have to come this way. We could have come up 101 and missed this bridge entirely."

"But.."

"But nothing. You know how I feel about bridges and you came this way because you are the ‘Anti-Christ.’"

"I’m driving so I get to pick the route."

"I coulda drove."

"Yeah, right."

"Well I coulda."

"So how did your truck get to be three different colors?"

"That.."

"I rest my case."

"You’re still the Anti-Christ."

I looked at my watch. It was just a little before 9 am. At 10 we were supposed to meet our friend Trey at "Misdirection’s", a magic shop that is just few blocks away from Golden Gate Park.

Trey is a performer at fair also. His moniker is ‘The Professional Showoff’ and although his faire shows consists mostly of stunts, fire and a bit of juggling, he is also a fine magician.

The traffic finally let up and we entered San Francisco. The city by the bay has a lot of hills, and a lot of stop lights on those hills. My truck unfortunately has a standard transmission. Which means it rolls backwards a bit on those up hill stops.

Snipe was beginning to get peeved again because people were getting right on our tail at the lights.

"I wish they wouldn’t do that." Snipe growled.

"So we roll backward and hit em, big whoop. The truck is three different colors. Do you think I give a crap.?" I stated.

After that Snipe just smiled at each stop light, "That’s it. Come a little closer."

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on who you were rooting for, we had no accidents and eventually arrived in the Park area.

The traffic thinned to nearly nothing as we made our way to the Magic shop. Once there we found a parking spot, fed the meter, and walked across the street to ‘Misdirection’s’.

Trey was standing out front. He was wearing black jeans, a white long sleeve shirt and had a whip tied around his waste for a belt.

I already knew the answer but I had to ask anyway, "What’s with the belt?"

Trey just gave a big smile and answered, "Because whips are cool."

We hugged each other in greeting, because that’s what Rennies do, then proceed to enter the shop.

Trey pushed the door but it wouldn’t budge. "Huh, that’s funny. He’s always open on Fridays."

I checked my watch and saw that it was well past 10.

We peered through the windows to see if anyone was inside and it was at this time that we noticed all the garlic.

"What are you doing?" Snipe asked with an annoyed voice.

I continued to act like I was looking for something on the floor board of the truck.

"Nothing’" I answered.

"Yes you are. What’s up?" He asked.

I reached under my seat hoping against hope that I would find something that had been kicked under it to give my excuse some credence. Bent forward with my head between my knees I was unable to see out the windows.

My name is Steve. I am a magician. Not a cool Merlin or Gandalf magician, but more of a pull a rabbit out of a hat magician. I am one half of the comedy magic duo of "Myth & Magic."

The other half of the duo, Pat ‘Snipe’ Reule was driving the truck.

We were on our way to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. We were scheduled to perform at a Renaissance Faire that weekend.

Right now Snipe was driving the truck over the Oakland Bay Bridge. I could hear the thump thump thump of the tires on the bridge. I could feel the vibrations through the seat and the sides of the cab. I could feel sweat appearing on my forehead and the palms of my hands begin to moistening. I could feel my testicles sucking up into my body.

"Wow," Snipe said, "Look at the ocean way down there. How far up do you think we are?"

"I have no idea." I said as I continued to ‘fake’ looking for something. You see, I don’t know why, but I have a terrible fear of high bridges. High bridges over water. Well, that’s just a double header of terror as far as I am concerned.

"Did you ever see the video of the last big quake when parts of this bridge fell?" Snipe continued his ribbing.

I knew, he knew about my phobia, "Kiss my.."

"Asshole !" Snipe yelled at the driver of a Prius that cut us off.

Snipe swerved to avoid an accident as he did, my head smacked against the glove compartment door.

"Ouch!" I shouted as I rubbed my head.

Snipe honked the horn at the Prius. The driver of the Prius waved back in reply, but only used his middle finger.

"It’s on now." Snipe said under his breath and hit the gas.

Oh great, I thought to myself, I’m on a high bridge, way up over water and I’m in a car chase. What else could possibly go wrong this weekend.

LARPD to partner with Renaissance Productions on Scottish Games

October 22, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

LIVERMORE, Calif. ─ The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District is gearing up for the sixth annual Livermore Scottish Games and Celtic Celebration, coming up in spring 2009. This time around, the District is partnering with event producer Renaissance Productions to design, market and bring to life the 2009 Scottish Games.

Patrons to the event will see an array of new offerings and excitement as LARPD and Renaissance Productions plan to extend the levels of entertainment diversity and interactive experiences to the show. Family-friendly events and Scottish activities will highlight next year’s event. Attendees will enjoy bagpipe bands, Celtic rock bands, drumming, fiddling, highland dancing, Olympic-style competitions and kids’ games. There will be genealogy and clan tents and plenty of Scottish merchandise and food.

A new “Calling of the Clans” ceremony will introduce and honor all the Scottish clans in attendance for the weekend. Historically, the Calling of the Clans was a gathering of clans in preparation for battle, unifying all the clans as one.

In a nod to their original incarnation centuries ago, modern Scottish Highland Games will revolve around athletic and sports competitions. Heavy athletic events such as the caber toss, weight toss and impressive displays of strength and skill will draw in visitors, who will be able to try their hand in the competitions. Numerous historical re-enactment groups offering a glimpse into the past will educate patrons on the history of the times.

LARPD selected Renaissance Productions for the team’s knowledge of event production and marketing experience. Renaissance Productions runs successful events throughout the West Coast and consults on events of all genres around the country.

“We’re very excited to be a part of the upcoming Livermore Scottish Games and Celtic Celebration,” said Marti Miernik, Vice President and Co-Producer of Renaissance Productions. “We are thrilled to partner with the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District and are focused on engaging the local community to help grow this phenomenal event. We are looking forward to crafting this celebration of Scottish heritage for the people of Livermore and the Bay Area.”

“With the great response we’ve received from the attending public over the last few years, we’re excited to work with Renaissance Productions to help expand our offerings and outreach,” said Katrina Hole, Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator for LARPD. “Their established track record of successful events and growth is directly in line with our hopes for establishing this event as one that will be on the area calendar for years to come.”

The Sixth Annual Livermore Scottish Games and Celtic Celebration will be held on May 16 and 17, 2009, at Robertson Park, 3200 Robertson Park Road, Livermore. For more information, please visit www.larpd.dst.ca.us or www.livermoregames.com.

Announcing the Birth of "Renaissance Village"

September 24, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

For the past few weeks we have had a bit of uncertainty about the location of the faire for 2009. I can now happily and joyfully tell you about the location. We will be having the faire at what is currently called “Quaker Mills” This location is just outside of Joplin, and closer to Joplin than the previous site.

Over the next few months we will begin to transform Quaker Mills into “Renaissance Village”, which will become it’s permanent name. The site is just gorgeous! It has Spring river running along side it, plenty of shade, plenty of trees, parking for around 3,000 cars and even real priveys! On top of this, there is a huge camping site that has water hook-ups, no electricity yet, but maybe by faire time. There will be pictures posted of the site this evening.

It is the intentions of Joplin Renaissance Festival to make this a permanent site from now on. We will be holding many festivities at Renaissance Village, other than the faire, so keep watching for other activities coming up.

Thanks to all for the support and kind words during this transition time. None of this could be made possible without all of you “Rennies” out there. Thank you all so very much!!

Des Moines Ren Faire 9/20-21-08

September 24, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Hail everyone,
I finally returned from my journey to the Des Moines Renaissance
Faire in Iowa on Sunday night. It was a drive, but well worth it. I
had a blast at this little faire. Permanent buildings, great
performers, good ale, great prices and all round fun. Queen Catherine
and her court do a great job and I was pleased to be a part of their
court to help fill in. This was the last weekend for their faire,
which normally runs from labor Day weekend for three weekends, but,
due to the massive rain the previous weekend, they postponed their
last weekend until a week later. The weather was fantastic. Anyway, I
just finished my pictures from there, where Romance and Chivalry
weekend culminated with the royal wedding between Queen Catherine and
the Duke of Somerset, now King. And, since I was in it, I didn’t get
any shots of it, but everything else I did of what I could. What an
awesome time I had learning several dances and doing them with the
court for the people. So, if anyone is interested, just follow the
link. Enjoy!!!

The 7th Annual Renaissance Symposium

September 22, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Will be held at the Doubletree hotel and Modesto Convention center in Modesto, CA, on February 6th-8th, 2009.

It’s time to come together to learn from each other and share ideas to help make for a better Renaissance Faire experience. To be held at the Modesto Doubletree on February 23rd and 24th, a weekend long workshop & symposium geared toward faire participants, vendors, and playtrons. Basically it’s for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge about history, performance, vending, production, and more.

This year we’d like to have panels with a good number of the vendor and guild/theatrical coordinators (one session for each), so the guilds and vendors can hear what’s being looked for in the upcoming season in one go. There will also be vendor and guild coordinator roundtables this time on friday night to help kick off the weekend.

The website can be found at www.rensymposium.com
