In Memoriam: David Ponkey

As many of you have heard, our community has lost storyteller, David Ponkey (aka Jack the Story Teller) who passed away last week after a
long battle with cancer. I have been waiting to pass along the news in a missive until I had memorial information, which I received last evening.

If you’d like to see and hear some of his stories, there is a YouTube page here http://www.youtube.com/user/parsivale

To purchase David’s CD’s Painted Fan, three Asian Folktales or Epic Days, facets of three epics, you can order them through Jackie Baldwin at jackie@storyloversworld.com ($15 for one/ $25 for two)

There are three remembrances that I know of, I imagine there will be one at Casa too, watch Facebook and Tribe for more information on that. I am just the messenger on all of these and do not have any more information that what is included here.

The first two are forwarded by Walter Askew and both are Sunday March 29th. You can see the invitation here http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/event/David-Ponkey-Memorial/san-francisco-ca/01d8ffd9-34b4-4722-ad96-837a1233e3c9

Grove Tending
11AM A Quiet Respectful Memorial Dave’s Grove
Marin Open Spaces
Novato, Marin County

When Visiting Dave, Some of the best times were had sitting with the trees he cared for, and weeding and removing debris from the groves behind his old house. At one time it was important to keep these somewhat secret, for their own protection, now, it seems to me that since they will have no one regular warden, that this information must be spread across people and time.Wear work clothes, perhaps gloves.I suggest we meet at the entrance to the Marin Open Spaces area and go up the hill when we have a gathering, talk about Dave and clear and tend to the trees, going off to separate groves.

Specifics of what type of memorial will be worked out based upon the wants of those who show up.

This one needs to be controllable numbers, quiet respectful folks. Please remember this is a residential area and you are parking on streets by people’s houses. Park on San Marin Dr and walk in if possible. There is an Apple Market with mini mall and parking lot a few blocks away. Park there if you’re a walker.

To get there take the
San Marin /Atherton Exit off of 101 and go Westward on
San Marin Drive until you come to
San Carlos Way and proceed to the end of the street.

This map is inaccurate, but it’ll help:

All with good memories and stories of Dave are welcome to come and share them.
Jennifer Damico has been gracious enough to loan us the use of her house and yard under the trees on the edge of Vallejo. Please grab yourself something to eat before dropping by. Although there will be some beer and wine available please feel free to contribute beer, wine, snacks etc. I know Dave had friends in many different circles, so there are probably different remembrances going on for him — as many as there are ways to remember him.

Lets celebrate the life we’ll miss.

April 18th at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale In addition to the memorials above, there will also be one on April 18th at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale. I don’t have any more information, but there is a Facebook page for it here:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=59733150702#/event.php?sid=5392029ee345771ba0d0b60571a923b1&eid=60190522507

I’m not sure whether this page is accessible if you’re not logged into Facebook, but it came up when I googled it, so I think it will be.
